Artist Statement:
The growth of fast fashion has resulted in overproduction of garments and people buying more garments and keeping them for a shorter time. Donated and recycled clothing mostly end up in landfill, causing water pollution and sending bits of plastic into the ocean, impacting marine and wild lives.
Perhaps human’s habit of impulse buying applies to buying animals/pets as well. In Singapore, following the celebration of the Chinese New Year of Dog, animal welfare groups such as the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) will see a jump in the number of pet dogs given away or abandoned. Such trends can also be observed during the Year of Rabbit and Rat.
Through this painting
of a ‘sad face’ pug (Dutch bulldog), the artist wishes to draw people’s attention to this
issue and hopes that people can think twice before buying a pet for ‘auspicious’
reasons.
